Hartford University School
  The Hartford University School PSO

The Hartford University School PSO (Parent Staff Organization) is a group of Hartford parents and staff who actively support the activities of the school and provide opportunities to foster the strong sense of community among students, parents, families, teachers, and staff.   The PSO meets monthly to discuss what is happening at the school, to plan upcoming family events, to express concerns, and to celebrate successes.  PSO meetings are an easy way for parents and staff to communicate with one another about what is going on at Hartford.  Interested people do not "join" the PSO - they just show up at a meeting, support what the PSO does, or lend a hand when needed.  The input of all is encouraged and appreciated.  Click here for a volunteer sign-up form.

One of the primary functions of the PSO is fundraising.  Money is raised for two purposes: to support community-building family night activities at the school, and to pay for things that are outside of the regular budget.  Family Nights that are sponsored by the PSO include the annual pasta dinner, all-school picnics at the beginning and end of the school year, African-American Heritage Night, and Pumpkin Night.  Other activities that the PSO has sponsored in the past year include new athletic uniforms, a spelling bee, graduation party, staff appreciation meals, special field trips, school theatrical performances, and a partnership with the Urban Ecology Center (UEC) that enables students to travel to the UEC each semester.  Many of these items would not exist at Hartford if they were not funded by the PSO.

The principal source of funding for the PSO is its annual fundraiser in Fall selling Mr. Z's products.  The profit in 2009 was over $4,700, which will enable the PSO to continue its support of many of the great things that happen at Hartford.  Another source of income is the collection of labels and box tops.  Click here for information about the many ways that you can support Hartford - shopping at Pick N' Save, Office Depot, or Target; purchasing Kemps, Campbell's or Betty Crocker products; or clipping box tops for education.   Anything you collect can be dropped off in the office or sent to school with a student.  Finally, the PSO is currently selling Stone Creek Coffee specifically to raise money to support sending all students to the Urban Ecology Center during the school year.  Click herefor a copy of the order form.  The coffee fundraiser is continuous throughout the year.  Send the order form with your money to school, and coffee with be sent home with a student within a few days.
